Jade Tower, Sunny Isles Beach US

Herzog & de Meuron, 2018

The residential complex is located in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, USA. Architects Herzog & de Meuron were originally commissioned to develop a comprehensive masterplan, which was adopted in 2013. The Tower consists of 57 floors and houses 192 units, which range from studios to penthouses.

The purpose was to integrate the unlimited seafront and amenities with an innovative spirit, creativity and beauty in every detail. They chose a rectangular shape, so that all the units have a view of the city and the ocean, but also to minimize the shadow of the skyscraper on the beach to the east and to maximize the amount of direct sunlight. The columns and the bottom of the slabs are finely designed, and the windows have a special slope to avoid many reflections.

They designed an underground parking lot to integrate the amenities area with the beach and the ocean and give the feeling that there are no boundaries and it is like a resort.

The work is designed outside from inside and uses the structure in the most basic way, turning it into a sculpture. The sculpted effect is not decorative but an alphabet developed for the building. According to the architects, Structure = Architecture.
